Possibly the “best” bird ever found in the Pribilof Islands; a single adult Chinese Pond Heron furnished the first North American record in 1996. This attractive purple, orange and white heron lingered near the small marshy pond between Antone Slough and Antone Lake from August 4-9. This species is a very rare migrant even to Japan, and is scarce along the east China coast. It is migratory, wintering in Thailand and Indonesia, but is, needless to say, unlikely to occur in the Pribilofs again.
