Common Loon
Gavia immer

This is actually the uncommon loon on Saint Paul, being more common than only the rare Arctic Loon. Sightings of this large loon have occurred in all months of our season except August, but years can pass with no records. Good places to look for this, and other, loon species include the bays on the north and south side of Northeast Neck, and the shoreline around Marunich. The only likely confusion involved in the identification of this species lies with the Yellow-billed Loon, which is annual in the Pribilofs. In alternate plumage the two species are distinctive, but in basic plumage look for the Common Loon’s dark and straight bill, dusky brown crown and nape, and relatively horizontal bill posture to help separate it from the larger Yellow-billed Loon.
