Common Pochard
Aythya ferina

Common Pochards are the third most common Asian duck that occurs in the Pribilofs. Although they have not been recorded since 1998, Pochards were somewhat regular in the early nineties. In 1995 a large influx of this species occurred in spring, with up to six individuals sighted in mid to late May. Pochards are the old-world equivalent of our North American Canvasback or Redhead. They are smaller than either of our species and possess a blue-gray saddle in the otherwise dark bill. Look for Pochards in our deeper lakes in spring, especially Weather Bureau Lake, Sheep Lake and Webster Lake.
